relief print on Paper 15.5" x 12" $230.00 USD Sold
Living in the Sierra Nevada mountains we get to enjoy the change of the seasons, each season has its own special attributes that makes them all special. Fall is particularly nice up here. There are fewer visitors, so it's peaceful, and quiet, we have the place mostly to ourselves. But the aspens top it all, they turn brilliant gold and copper, set that with the vivid blue mountain sky and you get an exciting sight.
When the trees turn we go in search of the most brilliant stands of them around. The trees that modeled for this image live at Sorenson's resort off of highway 89 near Hope Valley. Sorenson's is a wonderful place that has cute little cabins to rent, and the biggest brightest aspens I've found.
This print reflects how I see these trees, and to my mind the best way to do that was with a reduction print, as many layers as it would take to get the colors the way I wanted them. After so much planning, color testing, drawing, carving, twelve layers of ink, and three to five or more drying days between layers, mission accomplished! To see it work out as planned is magic. This is why I love printmaking, it really is magic.
This is a reduction print, that means that the block is carved away after each color layer is printed, basically by the time it is all printed the block is destroyed, that's it, no more of this print can be made.
I got 17 very clean prints out of this project using Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash ink, on Mohawk Superfine Ultra White paper. The paper held up great despite all the layers, and It really took the ink well.
