Our plein aire group went to Sugar Pine Point State Park for a lovely day of Painting. The morning sun cast dappled light through the trees, and the flowers in the beds around the Ehrman Mansion were thick with blooms.
One of our painters, Charlotta was wandering around looking to choose a composition for her work when she walked down the front steps of the mansion. I was already looking at this view to paint when she strode down the steps, she looked like she stepped right out of a time gone by with her sun hat and skirt. She sealed the deal for me, and I got very excited to paint this composition.
I got a good sketch and color notes, as well as some reference photos to work from and worked on it till time to go. The perspective was a bit tricky with the curved turrets and angles, so it took some time and careful consideration to get that right. Once I was pleased with the building I got to work on the fun exciting part, the figure and flowers. None of it went quickly, but it sure was fun. I believe there will be more figures and flowers in my painting future.
