This painting is from a photo that I took on the way to Monument Valley.
We were on highway 375, also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway (I kid you not) in eastern Nevada, basically in the middle of nowhere. Cruising along I was amazed at the road mirage, it went across the highway and out into the landscape, vivid shimmering blue everywhere, it even had reflections. Managing to get the camera on my phone opened in time for some awesome shots, I already had plans in mind to paint this.
it wasn't without some trepidation that I took on this project, but my excitement, and love of experimentation overwhelmed any doubts. What concerned me were not knowing if the mirage itself would translate into a painting well, if it would look right. The perspective of the road, how would these bold directional lines on the road work, it's centered on the lane that the viewer is in, so the other lane is at a different angle. After all that, I'm so glad I did it, I learned a lot, it was wonderful fun, and I think it works.
Another step taken in my journey as an artist, each piece a little better, a little closer to my goals as the road stretches out before me, much like this painting.
