My husband and I visited Joshua Tree before we were married, well before Joshua Tree became a national park. It is one of our favorite places to explore, and soak in the sweet desert air while looking at the vast array of stunning wild flowers. Our children grew up climbing the boulders, exploring the slot canyons, and learning to love the desert aspect of nature.
I always come away from Joshua Tree with a whole bunch of great pictures, everywhere I look there is another must have shot. So it was inevitable that I would find a great picture from Joshua Tree to use for this assignment in my relief printmaking class last quarter.
This is a three color reduction print. That means that the block is cut away for each color to be printed, the block is basically being destroyed as you go, preventing any more prints the same from being made from this particular block.
You begin by cutting away the block where you want the paper to remain without any ink, and print the first color, in this case the light sand color. Next you cut away where you want the last color to remain, and run the next color, in this case the purplish shadow color. Lastly you cut away the block to preserve the previous color, and print the last color, in this case the black. The block could be printed with again, but would only produce the same image as the last run.
I am honored to announce that I won first place in the printmaking category of the 2018 Student Art Show at Lake Tahoe Community College for this print. There were many fabulous entries to compete with and I am very proud to be in such company. As I have learned to expect LTCC did an excelent job hanging the show. After the show was over all if the first place entries were shown again at City Hall for another exhibit. Both of these shows are well worth a look to see such skillful, creative work by our local students.
With this block I managed to get five nice prints, that cannot be printed again. The price is for the unframed print, I can mat and frame it if requested for an additional fee.
