My parents lived on two acres on the central coast of California that is covered with huge old oak trees. Many times when I would visit them I would take pictures, paint, or draw these trees. The tree I chose to use for the final project in my printmaking class is this huge, twisted, gnarly, old man of the forest that is my favorite of all the trees there. I love the way it reaches out it's branches as if to embrace the sky with so much graceful movement for something so solid. How many raccoons, opossums, squirrels, and birds have sheltered and nested in this giant I wonder.
As the final project that we did in class, using a piece of Japanese Shina plywood twelve by sixteen inches this is a woodcut print. The process is the same but the wood is more tricky to carve, and the block has to be shellacked to seal it before use, you end up with a very durable block that could last a lifetime or more if properly cared for.
I have two of these trees printed over a mono print, three on rice paper, and a couple more printed on Stonehenge paper, all offered at $75.00 each, un-framed.
